Jefferson County

Jefferson County was founded in 1913 and was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson. The first permanent settlers arrived in the valley in the late 1800s, and they quickly began to build homes, businesses, and farms. The county developed as an agricultural center, supported by irrigation projects that transformed the arid landscape into productive farmland.

The early years of Jefferson County were challenging, as the settlers had to contend with harsh winters, heavy snowfall, strong winds, scarce resources, and the demands of rural frontier life. Long freeze-thaw cycles and significant snow loads shaped both farming practices and construction standards. The county soon grew into a thriving agricultural community. By the early 20th century, Jefferson County had established itself as a stable and growing region in eastern Idaho.

Jefferson County is home to many historical landmarks and attractions, including Market Lake Wildlife Management Area, Camas National Wildlife Refuge, Jefferson County Lake, and the Jefferson County Historical Museum. The county is also located just north of Idaho Falls and within close proximity to Brigham Young University–Idaho, one of the largest universities in the region.

Today, Jefferson County is a vibrant and growing community. It is home to a diverse population of over 30,000 people, and it remains a strong center for agriculture, small business, and rural enterprise in eastern Idaho.
